For your fireplace or woodstove you will need:
1. A hearth that meets fire code standards.
2. A chimney that meets fire code standards.
3. A properly installed flue pipe.
4. A flue pipe temperature gauge. (Tells you if you are burning efficiently)
5. A fireplace poker set, which includes;
Brush
Poker
Log tongs
Shovel for ash
Firewood box
Pot of water-this brings humidity back into the house.
Coal bucket-to put ash in when cleaning out stove or fireplace.
And of course, corncobkindlin’ firestarters.
Clean the chimney once a year, or as needed, depending upon the amount of wood being burned. Use chimney sweep logs or chimney sweep powder in your fireplace or woodstove once a week. Make sure your firewood is well seasoned. Using green wood will make creosote buildup in your chimney, and could cause a chimney fire.
Enjoy these tips from the folks at Corncobkindlin’ and have a safe and happy woodburning season.
